First let me explain our situation. I am a single mom of 2 kids, I have recently been put out of work for a herniated disc in my back. Our gas is due to be shut off tomorrow. It has been getting colder where we live(below freezing at night). I am looking for a way to temporarily heat part of the house until I can come up with some money somehow to get it turned back on. We cannot use the stove since it is gas as well. I just want to keep my kids warm. Any ideas that don't cost any upfront money would be helpful since we don't have a dime to our names. Oh yeah, welfare isn't an option, I've already been down there and have to wait for an answer that could take up to a month.

Cancel the internet connection eh?? Too bad I don't have a computer at home, I am using my neighbors. I have already eliminated whatever expenses I could, canceled my cell phone despite the ETF fees, no cable, dropped my car insurance, and only drive when absolutely necessary. Nothing left to give up, unless I start selling my kids toys.

Talk with the gas company. Utility companies typically have programs established for people that cannot afford the service. Chances are, they will be willing to work with you. Also, check with local charity groups to see if they can help, as well as government assistance programs.

Hi Jenny,
I'm gonna go with DEEJAY for the first valid suggestion. Agencies that offer solutions; be they local government; the service provider; churches; social service groups.
No offense meant at all to any other answers but getting other heating Products doesn't strictly sound like a viable resolution for you; in the sense of buying HEATERS.
WELFARE might not be the best option, but if I was in your "chill", I'd be nagging everyone I could. I have one other suggestion. "Habitat For Humanity". Check their website "DOT" com and send an inquiry. I have to believe someone will have an answer, and it isn't some bogus trash like extreme home makeover.
Do you RENT? OWN?
HFH has outlets/ Thrift stores in many locations. Beyond that; they have donated materials. Beyond that they have contacts with hundreds of vendors/ suppliers/ contractors

Temporarily, if you have a basement, typically it will be warmer than any above ground room. Clear out a corner of the basement, where drafts are minimal, and built a 'blanket tent' just big enough to accomodate everyone, that can be closed off to the rest of the room. It may be tight, but the body heat from everyone inside could help to warm everyone inside. If necessary line the inside floor and walls of your corner with sheets, summer clothes, pillows or whatever is available to help retain heat inside the corner. One could try reaching out to religious faiths as many can lighten burdens to give you time to regain your strength. Government agencies in your area may also be able to lighten your load as well. Be well. Take care.

You make this tough, without ANY money all you can do is ask family, friends or neighbors if they have an elec space heater that you may borrow for awhile While your at it, ask for an elec hotplate to cook on.. You can call the Salvation army, they can give you the money to keep your gas on or at least give you an elec space heater. Also you could call Goodwill and explain your situation to them. Google emergency assistance in your town and state, there must be an agency somewhere that will help, just keep trying, appeal to anyone and everyone you can think of.
Good Luck

A small electric heater. Shoots your electric bill up though. Some churches are more then willing to help someone having problems like this. The Salvation Army may even be able to help you if you can just go and talk to them. Some people don't believe but seriously, if you talk to God, he will help you find a way.Good luck and I hope you are able to find your way .God Bless you and your family.

See if you can get help from anyplace local to you.
Just be safe you dont want to do anything that could cause a fire best thing to do is get up early and start asking everyone even your local churches.

Some states have a law that electricity / gas cannot be shut off in the winter if there are small children living in the house.

seek help from a local church. explain your situation to them. some churches will help people in their time of need. don't be too proud to ask for their help there is a difference in a hand out and a helping hand.

Cancel your internet connection, use that money for gas.
The gas company can not turn off your gas in winter months if you have kids living there.
