'Master of Fine Arts' or MFA

No, you usually do not need your undergraduate in the same field as your MFA though you may have to take a few lower level courses as "catch up".

MFA programs are interested in your portfolio more than anything else. Make sure your portfolio is solid and shows the potential of your artistic ability.

This is different than what will be required to get into an MA program in one of the arts - which may well require an undergrad in a related field.

Understand that an MFA isn't where you learn about art - it's about raising your art to the highest level.

It may depend on what school you want to get into. I think many will require a sample of your art work, though. My college doesn't offer a masters in fine art, but you really have to prove yourself to the faculty in order to earn a bachelors of fine arts. I settled for a BA in studio art. I took the same classes as a fine arts major, but I didn't have to have my work judged by the faculty.
