This would be such a costly setup it would never pay for itself. A water heater needs 4000 plus watts of electricity to heat water. You would need an entire field covered with solar panels to generate that kind of power.

You are much better off getting hot water solar panels. You will need a circulate pump, control relays, and a new water heater with a heat exchanger in it.

These installations are simple however if you don't have electrical and plumbing experience it will be difficult. You also need to be able to get the heavy panels on the roof.

In most cases, yes. You have to have a place to put the panels where the sun can get to them, access from that place to the water heater, someplace for the converter and the wiring necessary to supply the water heater.

Might be easier to use solar to heat the water directly.

Adding solar panel to generate back up power supply is an inefficient way of correcting basic flaw????

The latest version of efficient water heater do nor required electricity for back up or heating

What you are using are older and inefficient solar water heater that required back up
