There are always desktop and laptop computer sales. Go to http://www.blackfriday.info/ads/ and glance through the ads from Best Buy, Staples, Circuit City and Office Max. They have a number of low end and high end computers. Trusted brands include: HP, Compaq - which is actually part of HP, Lenovo and Dell. Things you should look out for is a good CPU; I recommend Intel Core 2 Duo. The computer should have at least 1GB of RAM and a 120+GB hard drive. It should also come with builtin Wireless/LAN and DVD burner. HP, Compaq and Lenovo all offer under $1,000 laptops with these specifications.

Does it need to be brand new? Refurbished models are returned to new quality, and cost loss.
