My partner works away, and while he is gone, I have to record games for him, then he spends a lot of time when he is at home, watching them. This can be a bit irritating. Also, he is British and I record NFL. He is supposed to like football(soccer) for goodness sake. At least I understand that! No disrespect, but I just don't get it.

Get him to buy one of those machines which records whatever you pre-set. Then get him to pre-set it. I know you already get time to yourself when he's away, but there's still loads of fun to be had while others are watching TV

My partner was a sports widow in the summer months for 23 years.
I was off playing cricket every Saturday and Bank holiday from the end of April till the middle of September.
I also played 2 evenings a week.
For the past 2 years i have been suffering with Spinal Stenosis and have had to stop playing, now she moans all the time that i am under her feet, if i get out of her way and go watch the sport on the telly that's wrong as well.
You say you don't get it neither do I, can't be right for doing wrong, seem to be wrong for doing right.

I used to be a sports widow but then I thought, if you can't beat em, join em. I learned a little bit by googling and then I asked questions while he was watching the game and he took time to answer them. Now I understand a little more about football and baseball and hockey. If you seem interested he will appreciate it. You don't have to get it, you just have to get that he gets it. And plan some things for half time and between periods of the games. Like special snacks and maybe some snuggling. Buy a hat with his favourite team logo on it and wear it while the game is on. Learn a few of the players names and mention them. Pretend. After awhile you won't be pretending anymore and you might find that you like it. And the bonus is that you will be doing something together and not getting him or yourself upset.

A little story from my dear partner....during WW2, his Dad was away in the Air Force for 6 years. He was a keen follower of the North Sydney Bears - a rugby league team. During the entire time that he was away, his wife took the children along to every game that the Bears played, whether at home or away. She would buy a programme, and as the game progressed, she would write on it, who scored and when they scored. Then, she would enclose the programme with her weekly letter to him. That way, he was able to keep up with his favourite team. She was not a sports widow, since she did love the game too, but I think its a lovely story of devotion !

I was a football widow, so I learned the game and watch with him. To make it more interesting, each week, I print off the games and we predict who will win. I'm proud to say that I often get more correct than he does.

Into football mayself big time. Course if the lady of the house makes any effort to get me engaged in a boy/girl sport, the tv on/off switch can work instantaneously. -- Just a matter of favorite sports, and somethimes you have to sacrifice one for the other. (woe is me)

Oh yeah. And what bothers me the most is the constant flicking from channel to channel and trying to follow all of them at the same time.
