Matter is any physical object or material.
So wood, ivory, bone, stone, fabrics, ceramics, clay, and metal are all matter that would have been available anytime in the past.

Matter is EVERYTHING made of atoms. So what did people use for matter? They used matter. A stone is matter. Water is matter. New materials are matter today, just as much as wood and metal are matter.
