That is the perfect thing to write, nothing!
Now that is out of the way, some early numbering systems, such as what we know as Roman numberals, had no zeros. You could show thousands and tens with no need to show there were no hundreds or units as in MMXX.
They were not needed with a non-positional notation system, but when what we call the Arabic or decimal numbering system bases on the powers of 10 came into use, something had to be done to show that there were no values of a particular power in the number. You need some way to show there are no hundreds or units in 2020, the decimal value or MMXX.

the concept of 0? i have no clue. but i know 0+1=1 anything you add with 0 is that other number. oh yea and also anything times 0 equals 0 thats all i know.
