Need to know how often the stove pipe has to be thoroughly cleaned. One person said at the end of the heating period, the other said every two weeks! Who is right?

We have heated a 2200 s.f.home with only a pellet stove for 7 years.

We shut it down and vacuum thoroughly inside daily. During heavy use in fall and winter, we vacuum the pipe (from outside) thoroughly once a week.

Even the guy that has to occasionally perform service on ours said that he wished every customer would keep their stove as clean as ours.

This is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to heat, it is very efficient, does a good job, and is economical, too. Ours paid for itself in about the first two years. We bought the big R2D2 type Thelin, with the battery back-up. This is one of the best investments we have made in our home.

Great answer from CAT.

Consider it's like any other tool; appliance; etc. Better maintenance creates a better result, and a longer life time.

Certainly useage factors into cleaning scheduling; but as Cat said, the more often you do the maintenance the less stress on the equipment.. IE: Vehicle Oil changes.

I don't know about brands, and I had one 4 years ago in WA state; that was no larger than a Microwave Oven; that heated a 1000 sq. ft. area just fine. I do know it had an auger type auto feeder; which saved some effort.

The good thing about pellet stove is that they DONT have to be cleaned alot. It's always a good idea to clean at the beginning of every burn season, rather needed or not. Just walk outside every now and again when it's burning and make sure you have good smoke flow coming out of your chimney.
