Suddenly lost 40 gigs or so. Did a Spyware scan, slowed the loss of GB. Now at 15.9 ( On a 120GB laptop. ) I really just want to reclaim the lost GB, someone said to look in. C > Windows > system32. And to look for duplicate files. Is there an easier way then too do that? Anyways, doing another Defrag, and diskclean up. And a Virus scan. But is there MORE I could be doing here? Thanks.

There are a number of things which could be responsible for taking enormous amount of space on your hard drive. Recently, did you suffer a system failure and the computer had to reboot? If so, Windows automically creates a memory dump which can be enormous. If you use hibernate on your computer, Windows automatically creates a hibernate.sys file which can be enormous as well. Duplicate files is another possibility; however, I rarely see duplicate files responsible for such a large amount of space. There are a number of things which you can do to recover hard drive space.

1. Decrease the size of the Recycle Bin: Windows, by default, sets the size of the recycle bin to 10% of your hard drive space. So, in your case, 10% of 120GB is 12GB. I doubt very much you need so much space for the recycle bin. To change the size of the recycle bin, right click the recycle bin icon on the desktop > select Properties > move the slider to 3% > [O.K.]

2. Reduce the size of system restore: Windows XP and Vista, by default, creates system restore points periodically. By default, Windows reserves 12% of the hard drive space for creating restore points. No one needs that much space. Right click the My Computer icon on your desktop > select Properties > select System Restore tab > select the hard drive (i.e drive C:) > click [Settings] > slide the ruler to 3%-5% > [O.K.].

3. Reduce the size of space reserved for Internet Explorer cache: For whatever bizarre reason, Windows reserves more than 1GB of hard drive space for temporary internet files. You can decrease this setting to a more reasonable 250MB. I don't know which version of IE you are using, so I can't give you exact instructions. On the Menu bar> Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > Browsing history > Setting > ...etc.

There are just so many different ways you can save hard drive space. Rather than write them all out, I recommend you read an article from PC World Magazine entitled

"Eight Tips for a Faster Hard Drive: Defrag your hard drive the right way; remove big, useless files; find duplicates." -- written by Steve Bass (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,128993/article.html)

P.S. Someone already mentioned the free program CCleaner. I love the program and it's efficient and easy to use. You can download it at: www.filehippo.com
