I agree. Being energy self sufficient sure would help us solve many of our worst problems. Also, using hydrogen fuel cells would improve our air quality too.
I think the JFK comparison is an apt one...well done!.
EDIT: To Phil (above): the one thing which will most improve our environment is switching to alternative fuels!!! You can't care about the environment and burn 50 gallons of gasoline a month (or a week in the case of SUVs and trucks).

I don't think that any issue of development should be handled by the Federal Government at all.
What does it have to do with the president.
JFK also said "It's not what the country can do for you, but what you can do for your country".
It's not their job.
It's the job of the private sector.
Why should the government tax you and cost you money just so it can develop fuels that MAY have a potential to save you money.
Let the innovation of the free market find alternative fuels. After all, don't you like your computer? Think of how far they have come based off the private market.
The Federal Government's job is to protect our country, protect our liberties, and print sound backed money. That's it. Not to fill us with all kinds of programs, incentives, and ordeals. Not to nation build, not to run empires all over the world.
Ron Paul has offered us all of this, and is growing exponentially.

Yes, we need to solve this problem of oil addiction, and the politicians seem intent on keeping us on the diet of foreign oil. If we spent a tenth of the money to rebuilt Iraq on scientific projects to find alternatives, we wouldn't need to care what is happening in the middle east.

It certainly should be a top priority for any candidate. The oil companies need to keep us addicted to oil until they can come up with another source of fuel to gouge us with.

The fuels are being developed -- we need to develop more technology to use the alternative fuels. I agree with you!
