Is your science project done? If so, then there's nothing to really worry about (unless it was a group project - if so, then ask her if you can make it up, assuming you'd rather take the grade than take the zero). If you didn't do your science project, and you skipped school because of it, then the fault is all on you, and there is no way around it without it being extremely obvious. Lying is never the solution - teachers can see through lies, except for the younger ones. But they know what to look for - at least the ones in my school do...

It depends on what your parents will go along with. If they knew you stayed at home to work on the project and approved, have them write you an excuse. What they put in your excuse is up to what you are willing to "fudge" about. If they wont help you out of this, I guess you have to tell the truth and take whatever they decide you deserve. I also would wonder how much time you had to do the project and why you were doing it at the last minute before I decided how much to help you out of your situation.

Skipping school isn't the solution to your problem. If you had time constraints, you should have talked to the teacher about them, and worked out some mutually acceptable way to handle the situation. When your teacher sees you again, tell him/her you did something dumb and find out if you can do a make up project.

Looks like a lot of answerer's are saying to fib. OK, here's one you can use if you have the guts (you will probably be expelled if you use it)

I was feeling disgruntled so I stayed home to clean the rifles

Here's one I used on my boss: I called in and said "I have to appear in court today to answer stalking charges of a former boss who said I took too much time off".

Seriously, the truth is the best way, but sometimes painful. Still, I vote for the truth.

You could try being honest and saying that you'd like a second chance to earn the credit for the project,

When you make a decision, you have to live with the consequences. Adults understand this. Now perhaps you do to.

just say you had a small emergency that needed taking care of (which technically is not a lie) but everythings fine now and you probably wont be absent agin for at least quite some time

if they ask you what it was just say you dont want to talk about it, or find some exscuse to slip away (usually teachers arent too nosy about these types of things though anyway(
