We made 3000 B-17s in Long Beach. They are made of aluminum by shaping with hammers.

Construction ranged from fabric-covered wooden frames similar to aircraft from World War I to all-metal with various other materials also used. The Hawker Hurricane from The Battle of Britain was fabric-covered while the Messerschmidt bF-109 and Supermarine Spitfire were all metal. The British DeHaviland Mosquito was of mostly wooden construction with a plywood skin. The aircraft grade metals were being used for fighters for homeland defense, so the DeHaviland design team came up with that design.

Construction of some was completed in a matter of days. Others could take up to two weeks.
