Alexander Tyler once noted: "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years." -RKO- 11/11/07

Democracies don't last. Eventually, the majority realizes that it can plunder the minority. Then comes anarchy.

Incidentally, we are not, nor have we ever been a democracy. We are supposed to be a republic. The truth is, we are rapidly sliding into a dictatorship. This Administration, the the coomperation of the Congress has been demolishing the Bill of Rights. The Second Amendment has been under attack for forty years. Now, the Patriot Act has destroyed the Fourth Amendment (unreasonable search) and the Military Commissions Act is an attack on the Fifth Amendment (removing habeas corpus, right to legal council, an open public trial, the right to face your accuser, no secret evidence - AND NOW, TORTURE)

Americans had better wake up.

Vote for Ron Paul, the only candidate who stands for FREEDOM.

It is also, however a very un-democratic practice and potentially the beginning of the slippery slope to the death of democracy.

Well, since it is expanding, not contracting, there is no reason to believe that it won't be the steady-state end result.
