get a dell. Right now, if you go to dell.com, and select a vostro desktop, make sure to select windows xp, or vista, based on your preference, get 1gb of ram or more, and a 120 Gb hard drive, and you'll have everything you need.

Depends on how many users use the computer, You can divide the hard drive disk space between each user or limit them with a set amount. 20 GB per person seems like a fair amount. Ram should probably be at least 1 gb and at least 512 MB Graphics card for gaming, of course more is always better but prices tend to go up as well.

Hmm my personal experiences I would recommend a Dell computer.
The minimum on its specs that I would settle for would be...
3.0 Processor
60 gb Harddrive
512or so ram
WIndows Xp (not vista)

You can always upgrade the Ram and the harddrive and processor later.

If you played games like world of warcraft or something similar I would get 1gb or more of ram with same specs above.

I you don't know anything about computers make a small investment. Buy a compaq with a powerful chip and upgrade the memory and get the warranty from Circuit City or Best Buy

That depends on what operating system you plan to use:

For Linux (recommended), try the Dell Inspiron 530 N.
If you want a Mac, try the lowest level iMac.
If you plan to use Windows, any recent Dell will do.

Get the best one you can afford. You wont be needing to upgrade it soon. A cheaper one will adequately do most of the things you want except games. Gaming needs an especially powerful processor.

www.apple.com. Macs are truly the well rounded multimedia computers. Everything is integrated and works on them. Pictures, videos, music... you name it, they can handle it.
