Black is a political, cultural, and ethnic term--most people with even an elementary knowledge of Black history know that when people say they are "Black" it is NOT strictly meant that their skin is Black, but that they are a person of Black heritage. This is something very simple to comprehend. That is why a person like Gregory Howard Williams: http://www.lsu.edu/highlights/2006/10/images/williams2.jpg who is the author of the famous memoir "Life On The Color Line: The True Story of a White Boy Who Discovered He Was Black": http://www.educationupdate.com/archives/2002/oct02/issue/books-lifeonthecolorline.htm can say he's Black just as much as Nelson Mandela, an African can say it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_Mandela

Because Black over the years has been interpreted and displayed as a description of ALL people of African descent, regardless of their varying skin tones, hair textures, or eye colors. Black is a term to describe an ethnic group.

Latinos do a similar thing when many of them describe themselves as "Brown". Of course, they're not ALL brown, that would be ridiculous to assume. However, it is used as a general term to describe their kind of people and culture.

Common knowledge, this is.

I just come in a light shade of brown...so I guess I am brown lol. But yea I agree...Ive never seen an actual white-white person like the color...or an actual black-black person like the color.
Myself though, I almost look beige..or some shade of brown.

Oh and I agree with you.

umm I don't understand it either.
i mean if you say african american to a person who's not from africa then that's not correct
and if you say "black" or "white" that doesn't sound right for me..
so i have no idea why people call people that way..but i try to find the word that's most polite :)

I am a light brown and I prefer to be called black if you are referring to my race. There is nothing wrong with being black or dark and I don't understand why a lot of people from all minority races hate being associated with being dark. People keep saying that we are not black we are brown and that is not the case with everyone. I know black people who range from pitch black to dang near white. i for one call myself black and I love being black.

The word black just means dark/dirty anything darker than white just means black. You have a good point though and another question i always had is why do white people tan to make themselves similar to us? do they want to be black or what? but any who white people arent white either they come in all different shades to look at white people with red, blonde, black, brown hair, its just doesnt make any sense right? lol :)

I think it doesn't matter and it's just the descriptive term of the moment. Would you prefer Caucasian? That term is still used.
