I'm looking into constructing a fibre glass tank, 8ftx4ftx4ft.
If I make a mould out of timber, then gel coat & laminate, will this size of mould release
Or am i better off constructing the tank out of ply then laminating the ply ,can i then gel coat afterwards, this is a one off project.

before you start, get a catalogue from www.caktanks.co.uk They make holding tanks for motorhomes and caravans...a fraction of the price of the marine suppliers, and just as good quality. They have a large range in stock,so you should be able to get something to fit.

I want to agree with answer #1. My rationale is pretty simple. I used to work for a defense dept. contractor; making molds and subsequent forms from them. The process; as you initially describe is how we did them; but it's tedious; not at all an instant process; probably not cost effective for a DIY; and what if's (ooops's) do happen.

I'd probably check into purchasing.

Off a DIY topic sort of. I watched a show recently about a company that makes Fiberglass fuel storage tanks for Gas stations. I suppose you could call the process "laminating" fiberglass; as they create the tanks using layers of fiberglass windings with the resin and catalyst to create the proper thickness/ stability/ and leak resistant qualities of their tanks.
