cause they want to make room for new models for the upcoming year. same as with department stores, cars etc. etc.

Retailers purchase a lot of stock in anticipation that they will all sell during the holidays. If they don't sell, they liquidate because they need to make room for new inventory (and not just laptop inventory). Same goes for most high end electronics.

Not really. Laptops right now are cheaper than they have ever been.
Top of the line Laptops are almost $2,000. dollars cheaper than they were 2 years ago.
