Benedict Arnold was already bitter. Although a brilliant military leader he was passed over for promotion in February 1777. After the defeat of the British under General Burgoyne at Saratoga, General Gates received credit for it. Even though Washington restored Arnold's seniority over the other generals he remained bitter. He felt that he was denied the honor and respect that was due him. He made a lot of enemies. In 1778 Arnold was given command of the defense of Philadelphia. There he married Margaret Shippen, a young woman from a prominent family with Loyalist sympathies. The executive council of Philadelphia accused him of Tory sympathies and of using military personnel to do personal favors. A court-martial cleared him but it ordered Washington to reprimand him. Arnold brooded over his country's ingratitude and started secret negotiations with the British. Arnold was in command of West Point in 1780. He developed a plan to surrender that important military base to British commander Sir Henry Clinton. The capture of Major John Andre, who was carrying papers sent by Arnold to Clinton, exposed Arnold's treachery. Arnold escaped to New York, a British stronghold and became a brigadier general in the British Army. He led a raid on New London, Connecticut.
After the Revolutionary war he settled in England.

Benedict Arnold Battle Of Saratoga

Arnold was one of our legendary heroes at the time of Saratoga. He was wounded in the left leg for the second time, the first having been on the plains of Abraham in front of Quebec.

There is some controversy over the details of this battle. I am attaching two links, one from the British side and another an essay discussing the role he played in the battle itself. His aides generally give him the entire credit for the actions of 19 September, while others claim that he was not present on the field.

One story I've heard concerns Arnold's return to American soil after the West Point affair. He led a raiding party onto American soil and supposedly asked a patriot what the Americans would do to General Arnold if they ever caught him, and he was told they would cut off his left leg and bury it with full military honors, and then hang the rest.

Gates did get overall credit for the victory, something which evidently galled General Washington. Gates tarnished some of that shine three years later at Camden, when he managed to outrun his whole army after the defeat.

If I told you he was shafted, you wouldn,t believe me. Benedict Arnold is in my family tree. He was a renowned military tactition and the Government knew it especially president Washington. Truthfully, he was having problems with his wife Mary . She was fooling around with Lafayette and was hassleing George to be more like Lafayette and buy her nice gifts like he does. The Government refused to give him more money even though he masterminded Saratoga and was hailed for it. The British promised him the big bucks and recognition in England. George bit for the bait and they screwed him worse than his own country did and it cost him everything he worked so hard for and labled him for eternity. All because of his old lady.
