They see it as a cash-cow, nothing more.
If they viewed it as a "shining beacon of hope" they would come here with intentions of becoming an American, not coming here to work for 10 years and retire back to their 3rd world country.

For many people America is a beacon of hope as evidenced by the number of people coming to America, legal or otherwise.

People vote with their feet. The vote is overwhelming as YES. Most who come here, and assimilate, become successful because nobody told them that they couldn't make it. Unlike our native victim class who have been told by politicians (mostly democrats) and dominant media that they can't do anything for themselves so why try. As to the person who's proof that America is despised because foreign news reports say so, look at our own media, most of them hate America too. The rest of you who think this country is so terrible, I'll be more than happy to start a collection for a bunch of one way tickets to anywhere.

Maybe those who are in oppressed situations with their own govt. see America as a beacon of hope. However, many non-Americans are anti-US and would rather deal with other major powers like Japan and China.

people around the world view american IDEAS and GOVERNMENT (democratic republic, good economy) as a shining beacon of hope, however, most forigeners, HATE the americans as a people they believe that we are self centerd and not concerned about anyone or anything but ourselves
however, illigal immigrants continue to venture across our borders and into our homeland, (due to poor treatment or econmony in their homeland) and we continue to allow some (most) to stay
but yet in forigen policies, we can't seem to help anyone (african nations and children) or make a stand (trading with china) unless it gives us a finacial gain, unless we, the americans, profit from it, (oil in Iraq)
so, in a way, we are the shining beacon of hope, yet we also are the selfish peacocks who othink only of ourselves

i'm perplexed. Are you rather from the u . s . a . or yet another planet? A "shining beacon of desire" to whom, the wealthy parasitic banking and coverage community? we are speaking with regard to the main offensive, war mongering, oil stealing, land grabbing, earth strangling, bull shitting united states in the international, are not we? an analogous individuals who, extremely than habit criminal investigations and trials of suspects, imprison them off-shore in a rustic they loathe, in order that as that they are able to torture them without interference - bigots and hypocrites.

Outside of the current wars, yes.
Americans, believe it or not, is most known for their charity. No other country single-handedly takes on issues like gender inequality and global poverty than Americans. Check out
www.microplace.com
Our charity/investing in the global working poor, in order to increase their chances of success is the single greatest thing Americans can do to preserve our national security. Don't get me wrong. Our troops are truly the best, but we accomplish far more through open hands and arms than through clenched fists.

NO. If anything some view it as a place full of rich people where you can earn enough money washing their cars or working in factories to send home to help feed your family. This is not hope, its a last resort, for a desperate situation.

Of course they do. That's why you can visit any US Embassy or Consulate in the world on a nice day and see applicants lined up out into the street, waiting to apply for a visa. It's been that way since my grandfathers came from Sweden and Eire.

As long as we had money and the opportunity to make money, people saw it as a beacon of hope. Our personal freedoms also sent out a ray of hope for many people.
Now that our economy is in shambles and getting worse and our freedoms are being trampled on, maybe that beacon of hope is dimming.
Our unilateralism in Iraq isn't helping either.
