is the literature trying to symbolize anything (seriously, anything, Hawthorne used LOADS of symbols in his Scarlet letter book, like the bad guy symbolized evil, demons and stuff like that) or is he just stating a realist scenario (like a person being hung for killing someone else in the 1800's...that's realistic)?

The setting of a book or play is where the action takes place. If it was a play, the backdrop would be the hanging at the back of the stage painted to look like the scene where everything was happening. So, either actually or metaphorically , is the backdrop simply a realistic scene or are there symbols about the play in it as well? Hope this helps.

Basically it's asking whether or not the setting of the story is just there to make it more realistic, or if it is symbolic of something. The explain and provide proof part means to elaborate on your answer and to show why it's a symbol or not.
