If they do this naturally without thinking - then yes they have a gift. Counsellors are trained to do this.

It is possible to learn most of the skills that are required to become a reasonably effective Counsellor, but I don't think that it is really possible to learn to be empathic, you can only learn what being empathic, or having empathy with, means.
Some people do seem to have a natural ability to empathise with others, but even they cannot possibly empathise with everyone, for to do so would require that they can identify with, and relate to, every totally separate and unconnected emotion or experience expressed or described by another person.
Unless the 'Counsellor' literally shared the same experience as the 'Client', genuine empathy will only occur on an irregular basis dependant on a number of factors which is likely to include the common experiences of the Counsellor and Client.
Empathy, is not to be confused with 'sympathy', which generally refers to being 'supportive' and/or 'caring', and may be offered and provided on a far more frequent, general, and even casual basis. Empathy implies that a far deeper level of understanding exists between Counsellor and Client, and enables greater levels of trust to be invested in the Counsellor by the Client simply through a natural rapport between the two.
Empathy also has of necessity to be a genuine feeling or emotion. Any attempt to fake it, is likely to be detected fairly quickly by the recipient.
If someone seems to have a natural tendency to be empathic, then it could well be seen as that person being gifted. The person concerned may not always agree that this ability is always such a gift however.

Oh, yes. Quite gifted. Gifts are really places which have been developed in previous lifetimes. Because effort has been exerted in that area, development has continued in the time between incarnations, and emerged as a "gift". So anyone can have any gift, simply by exerting effort in the area in question, and confronting and trying to solve the problems which arise as they try to do stuff in it. Use your power for good.

Not according to the theory. You can apparently learn 'empathy' as its called, and use the correct body language and voice tone and platitudes to make someone feel like you are solving the problem.
Personally I think some people do this naturally and are quite gifted. As the recipient of much counselling, you can usually tell who's 'learned' it and who's a natural.

They would be characterized as having a high emotional IQ or being very good at picking up cues from non-verbal behavior. They would be considered talented, but probably not gifted.
