It was not such a big thing in Colonial America, for the simple reason that labor was cheap. After all, with all the indentured servants, et al, laborers were easy to find. There was no unemployment.
However, once the plantations took hold in the old south, with southerns being so lazy, slaves became important and were vital to SOUTHERN economy.

First let me say all slavery is W*R*O*N*G! But I would say the colonial Americans 'justified' slavery because they needed someone to work for free to help them manage the huge farms and plantations. Who would pick the cotton? Who would do the hard labor otherwise? Certainly not the rich white landowners.

because rich white southerners were too freaking cheap to pay for field hands.they also were too ignorant to adapt to an industrial economy like the north did, but the factories had child labor which was the same thing and women were equally brutalized. they wound up dependent on slavery because their whole means of survival was the plantation. even politics became tied to it because for a long term no candidate dared stand up for them if they wanted to remain in office. lincoln freed them as much because he needed to cripple the south as much as he believed it was wrong.

Same reason it has been an important institution all over the world for thousands of years. To get stuff done cheaply.

It was a great way to accelerate economic growth. America went from colonial outpost to economic powerhouse in just 100 years or so thanks mainly to slave labour.
