Let's see:
Enemies level is based on your level, and enemies gain more strength per level than you do. That means powerleveling is a disadvantage.
The only way to keep up then is with Junctioning. However, in order to junction, you first have to draw, which is a pointlessly tedious process.
Then when you do junction, you run into this little problem that your base stats get penalized if you cast a spell that you've junctioned. This basically takes any possible semblance of strategy out of the game, as you are getting encouraged to do nothing but attack every round.
Also, Gunblades, as they are designed in FF8, are completely non-functional. Not only do they not have a barrel, and therefore wouldn't be able to shoot anything, the angle the handle is at compared to the blade is such that if you struck anything reasonably solid with the blade, it would shatter your own wrist.

It has a terrific storyline, but a terrible battle system, compared to VII and IX. I enjoy it, but it can get way too easy.
