Can you tip me off to covers of songs that were dramatically changed for the cover? Example: Talking Heads covered Al Green's "Take Me to the River" VERY differently.

Thanks!

Have a listen to the Radio 1 Live Lounge album. Not songs that have been released but many cover versions there. Will Youngs 'Hey Ya' originally by Outkast is one that comes to mind as very different. Second compilation out now but not heard it yet.

Manfred Mann's cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light."

Marilyn Manson's cover of "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This" by the Eurythmics.

Tori Amos's cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is really different.

"My Little Red Book" - Arthur Lee & Love. Burt Bacharach wrote it and was furious when he heard Arthur's rock version.

"Dreams I'll Never See" -Molly Hatchet. Rocked-up version of the Allman Brothers "Dreams", with both songs being quite listenable

"Stand By Your Man" -Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics. Punk-metal version of the country song made famous by Tammy Wynette

I really like Jenny Owen Youngs cover of Nelly's "Hot in Herre" and Astrid Swan's version of The Killers "When you were Young"

Talking Heads comes to mind for Take me to the River but there is a more brilliant version by Eva Cassidy who wrote it and one other that I can't remember.

I think it was the group "Oar" that did a cover of Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice" lyrically identically but done in a bluegrass genre. Hillarious coming from a redneck sounding group!!!

The example I always cite of the perfect cover is Janis Joplin's cover of "Bobby McGee", by Kristofferson. Its validity is that it captures the spirit of the original while at the same time adding a new statement which was all her own. Thanks, Janis. R.I.P.
