its an engine with 4 pistons inside doing their thing (up and down), usually small, fuel efficient and rather low powered

Any gasoline powered engine block in an automobile contains a number of "cylinders" (named after their shape; literally a cylinder) A 4 cylinder car has 4 of these "cylinders". Inside these cylinders is where the combustion of the gasoline takes place. The resulting mini-explosion inside a cylinder causes a "piston" to move from one end of the cylinder to the other. As the pistons move, they, in turn, rotate a "crankshaft", which in turn, thru a series of gears, turn the wheels of your car. As you can imagine, if a car had more cylinders, there would be more explosions...resulting in a more powerful engine...therefore the choice of 4, 6 or 8 cylinders in most cars. A simplified explanation of the combustion engine, but it's the basic idea.
