I neglected to mention I had gone to see him to pay honor to him for his service to our country. He's fifty six, a combat wounded Vietnam veteran from the 101st Airborne with a bronze star with valor and two purple hearts. He left a kidney in Vietnam, his oldest son is in the Army in Germany waiting to be deployed to Iraq. The question...Why would a person who obviously despises our government encourage his son to serve his country, especially at a time like this?

My father is a Vietnam Vet. I never knew until I turned 25. He rarely talks about it now and refuses to get VA benefits from the gov't and refused the GI Bill, instead choosing to put himself through school.

My brother will be deployed to Iraq in February. My father encouraged my brother to do so, as my brother was lost and needed to discipline the military provided. I do worry that if we lose my brother my father will blame himself.

Moral is, the motivations are sometimes personal.

Supporting and defending the Constitution has nothing to do with supporting the government. You are defending the United States of America.

If those who despised the government could swallow thier bile at having to take orders from a draft dodger like Slick Willie, and still do thier duty, then that is the proper thing to do.

My whole family has served for 4 generations, have 2 cousins on the Wall,.... dad, uncle, and grandpa all POW's in WW2 {grampa died in camp}, 21 males and 1 female for all that time volunteering to do thier duty.

Regardless of who is in charge, it is your duty and obligation to defend this blessed land. To do any less...you are one of those who reap the benefits of freedom courtesy of heroes that you are too afraid to join .

We defend, you live. That's our job.

with all do respect. he didn't only leave a kidney in Vietnam but also a brain! many Vietnam veterans are suffering from mental illnesses. also people who join the military usually join because of lack of opportunity. they lack in education and are nationalist. also they have a sense of macho-ism! peace

He doesn't despise his country, he's been sorely treated by its politicians and some of his fellow citizens. He hopes and prays his son has the same love of country and will be treated better than he was.
