If the belt goes your car will not run. It's possible your clutch is going out or you are in need of an injector cleaning/tune-up.

You generally get zero notice when a timing belt goes bad. They just let go. When cars had timing chains, the car would just stop but not damage anything else. A broken timing belt can destroy the motor if the engine isn't shut off very soon afterward. This is why manufacturers recommend the belts be changed at mileage intervals well before their actual testing shows a belt will wear out.
The problem you are having now is from something else.

Your timing belt will strech a little, but the computer will make up and timing issues.
You should change this belt at 90k anyway, because if it breaks it will damage your engine. A little maintenance goes a long way here.
Sounds like a good tune up is also in order.

There's no certain way to tell when it is 'going'.If it is known to be a problem on a particular vehicle at or near a certain mileage,it is alot easier to replace the belt before it let you stranded than to wait til it stops. If you know it's prone to happen, get it before it gets you.
If the timing belt breaks while you are driving, then you need a tow to a garage also.If you change it before it breaks, you'll cut the by that much. It's going to break sometime. If it's an 'interference' engine, the pistons and valves will get bent and require MAJOR engine repairs or replacement.

You don't want the timing belt to break on you out on the road. Look at it and if it looks fraid; it is probably wearing out. Get a new one before you have to.
If in doulbt get a mechanic to look at it. PepBoys is very reasonable in prices.
