I went to the pharmacy today to get it refilled but they said my insurance could block it because it wasn't clear if I was just taking the 21 pills instead of the 28. My doctor never officially wrote down that I would just take the "active" pills. I asked on the way out of her office if that was okay. She said it was.

The reason the pharmacy said the insurance could block you was because of the way the prescription was written. You are supposed to be taking 28 days of pills, not 21. You are refilling too early because you do that. You need to have the doctor write the prescription in such a way as to have it be that you can refill the prescription every 21 days. Otherwise, your insurance is not going to cover your refills because they are coming too close together.

You can tell the pharmacy that you want to pay for the pills. You will also run out before the end of a year. You need to call the doctor and tell them what you are doing and ask about getting a few more refills to get you to your next pap smear. Your body needs to have a period every now and then so you need to talk to the doctor about how long you can go between periods with the BC pills you have.

It is okay to take the 21 actives and then skip the placebos. However, unless the doctor writes for a 21 day Birth control pack, I assume it is a 28 day prescription. Get your MD to rewrite the prescription for 21 days, and that should stop any problems.

There are two types of pills. The 28 day pack and the 21 day pack. If you are prescribed the 28 day pack, you don't have to take the sugar pills but, you need to wait a week before starting a new pack. The 4th week is designed so you can have your period that week. If you don't want to take the 4th week or even wait before starting a new pack then switch to the 21 day pack. I think your doctor said you didn't have to take them because you don't but you need to wait before starting a new pack.

No, you don't have to take the placebo pills...all they are is sugar pills anyway...they serve no purpose but to keep you on schedule with your pack of pills.
