I have 1 gb of ram and only a dinky 40 gb harddrive. Xp windows and a 1.6 processor. I want a 300 or more harddrive. If I buy new xpwindows with m own disk for registering, a plug and play external harddrive (the box I think one is called), and a proper virus protection SHOULD this be able to operate my computer faster? The windows sometime "hang" and web pages seem a little slow loading. I just want crap to work on this stupid invention!!! :) Rick

The best thing to do is get more RAM. 2 gb would be ideal for any computer nowadays. This usually fixes the slow web page loading problem. If you buy a 2nd hard drive the best way to run dual hard drives is to have all of your files (pictures, music, etc.) on one hard drive and all of your applications (programs, virus protections, etc.) on the other hard drive. Also, don't allow programs to just load in the default folders (program files or other). Tell your programs where to go and create a path. That way you have all your "eggs in one basket" and you can delete them easier if they ever get corrupted. This works for me.

An external hard drive will not help your computer run smoother, though it well help for storage. I would recommend upgrading the internal hard drive from 40GB to at least 160GB if you want more room and better capacity. It sounds like everything else isn't half bad. If you really want to go top end, though, I would go with the other recommendations as well (new motherboard, better processor, more RAM...).

znelson is incorrect. A newer version of windows will NOT make your computer quicker. You have an older computer, but that does not mean your system is slow or should hang on web-surfing. Vista will only make your system slower.

Try getting an external hard drive and moving most of your info to it. also try to defragment your HDD, and use disk cleanup. lastly install more RAM.

Linux would take up less space, run faster, and be more stable.
With WINE installed you can also run windows programs. Though you may want to check the apps db at the Winehq site to verify whether a program has problems. But there's always VMware.

Since I have not too Idea about the speeds of RAM Chips or ROM chips, but In this case if we are loading windows from the ROM then we must have a larger capacity to the ROM itself. Since currently only BIOS are on the ROM and they are DOS like, hence would be covering very less space. So to have Windows on ROM is good IDEA but for that you must have to design a larger chip memory that is to be embedded on Motherboard. Temporary solution is to Boot the OS completely by a PEN-DRIVE, or a DVD. Since on that also you would get too less Speed as comparing the hard disks. If you are saying to use ROM insted of the RAM than it's a very bad IDEA since RAM (RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY) is dynamic so we can write 7 erase data on it but ROM(READ ONLY MEMORY) can be just read or Executed, nor edited or used as storage.

I would get (at least) Windows Vista Home Premium. Its new, Microsoft has plans to make it faster, and everyone is going to be using it later on.

UPDATE: Your talking about an older system? Forget the new OS, you need a new PC. Also, virus protection dosent make you computer faster, it just protects you computer from bad programs that damage systems.

No it won't make anything faster. You want faster I would start with RAM. Although I'm sure your processor has a very slow bus speed also as may your RAM so I would update all of that.

A new motherboard and processor with low-latency.

Hi. The larger hard drive will give you more storage capacity but not more speed. My opinion? Add the drive if the machine is usable for you and start saving for a much faster future computer.

if you want speed get a new computer.
even that will not speed up you internet connection.

If I were you, and strapped for cash.
I would get a bigger hard drive and install windows.
a clean copy of windows can make a difference.

the longer you run windows, the more crap builds up in it, the slower it runs.
