I am flying from Heathrow Terminal 3, therefore I think I need to get to the station called Heathrow Terminal 1, 2 or 3 (HXX) - but when booking on NationalRail.com I get the alternative ZHJ as well as HXX which is much cheaper. Can I use this station? I have no idea where it is or how far it is from the terminal compared to HXX, and the National Rail website offers no help.

ie. will I be able to walk easily, or do I need to catch a bus?

thanks for any help you can give me, i'm getting a train from Derby.

I suspect the price difference comes from using the Underground to get to Heathrow, or the Heathrow Express. The Underground will be the cheaper option and the station 'Terminal 1,2,3' is accessible on foot from all 3 of those terminals at Heathrow. They're all jammed into one mad central patch at Heathrow. I don't know where the Heathrow Express delivers you to, but it runs out of Paddington so if you're coming from Derby there will quite likely be an element of Underground travel in either option. Go with the best one for the time of day you're travelling and then your budget.

The Heathrow Express station is closer to Terminal 3 than the cheaper Piccadilly Line station, both are connected by a safe, broad pedestrian subway, most of which has travolators installed. The Heathrow Express will get you to Paddington in about a third of the time that the Piccadilly Line trains take to reach the city centre.

ALL stations - Underground - Rail - Bus - are located in the centre of the airport and all are a very short walk from terminals 1, 2, and 3 (terminal 4 is the only one which is remote) - follow the very well signposted route - along with several hundred other people

Derby to London St. Pancras, cross over to Kings Cross, catch the tube to Heathrow 1, 2, &3. Short walk.

Look for advance purchase fares, a lot cheaper than just turning up.

Do not use Heathrow express, use the underground, its much cheaper.
The underground station is no further away than the express line and within easy walking distance of terminal 3.
