I live in texas and am doing a speech i would like some more opinions other than my own. i need a broader view of what others think. When you answer... explain yourself, give the state that you live and why or why not you think they should or shouldnt be allowed. I need some really good information from both sides of this issue. Thanks for your help!!! Jacob

this is good stuff. i am very pro-gun and i own a small arsenal, i understand that not every teacher should be allowed to carry a gun but all of you that say they shouldnt under no circumstances should be allowed you need to read the second link on SirBobbys answer. Also let me pose this question to you: How many of you that do not support this have been around guns, shot them or grew up with them? most people fear what they do not understand. i am not being insulting and welcome any comments or answers. Curiosity makes me ask. Thanks

Well, I'd say yes. Do you think tragedies like Columbine and VT would have happenned if teachers were armed for defense of not only for themselves, but for their students?
Possiblly so. But the damage done would have been much less severe. In colleges, I would even be in favor of allowing students to carry weapons for self defense.
Schools were once supposed to be a safe institute of learning. How are they supposed to be safe without being armed against a potential hostile intruder? The school is responsible for the safety of our children. We trust the school when we drop off our children every morning, yet tragedies like these happen. And those available who are responsible for our students are not prepared. If armed, they have a check against these situations, and may very well deter some students form orchestrating these massacres.
Edit #1: And I live in California, the state that assaults the second ammendment like it's going out of style.

YES!! So many Kids are bringing weapons into school, and if the teachers aren't prepared to handle it, then a tragedy will result. If a person pulls out a gun, shoots one student, and in reaction, a teacher pulls a gun on that person, then only two people might be hurt, whereas if only this one person in the school has a gun, they can go and pursue their hitlist for the few minuts while the cops are on their way... Then ten twenty or thirty will be injured or killed.
But what about the other side to this? What if a student grabs the teachers gun?? Easy! Well, first off, there should be an alarn on the holster that signals the police department immediatly when the gun is pulled, whether it is pulled by a teacher or a student, then you know that if all the teachers had their guns, at least one of them would be a few footsteps away from the classroom anyways.
I guess you also would have to think about funding for this issue too. The teachers would need lessons, and then need to be supplied with this equipment.. I also think that the teachers would need to have extra payment tacked onto their salary for going through this trouble. Would this be an extra tax? How would parents and other citizens feel about a new tax?

Um... no. I think you should pick a new topic. Maybe if the school shootings were more recent and more in the news right now this would be a good topic, but it's not a huge issue anymore. I doubt many people anywhere are going to say that teachers should be allowed to bring guns. I say change your topic. :-)

No, it creates a dangerous situation that is not tolerable in the school setting. We don't encourage anyone to settle their own problems wild-west style, much less teachers. Children should not be in the cross-fire.
If a teacher really feels she needs that level of protection, maybe the school board should take steps to increase school security. But it is not one teacher's right to decide what that security will be.

Bringing guns into school by ANYONE other than a police officer is a bad idea. Perhaps the teacher should be allowed to have a police officer in school though.

While I believe in everyone's right to bear arms, I think this idea is just plain stupid. I'm from Denver, Colorado. Public schools are already foaming at the mouth with Type B personalities teaching our kids. Do we really want them armed? I remember High School, and to be honest, there wasn't a teacher there I couldn't overtake. So if they are armed, and are overtaken, don't you think this only makes matters worse?

NO NO NO! Might as well give them to everyone, students included, if you're going to do that! Guns should not be allowed anywhere.

I am from California and personally advocate strict gun controls.
The more people that have guns, the more that will shoot them. We need fewer people packing iron, not more.
