I am a retired grandpa and have a daughter who is not married but is a teacher. We get along very well and she asks for my input on teaching although I have not been trained as such just experienced with raising 4 kids. If the kid was poisoned as you say and was asking for help because his/her life was in danger I would question the mother's judgment. But if it was not a life threatening incident then You, as an aunt might try to smooth things over between the two (Grandfather - Daughter) if they are truly so estranged the police have had to be brought in. If it was a life threatening poisoning then how was the grand kid poisoned and by whom? Do the police know of this?

I am from a family that is very close and talks things over before acting so it is hard to relate. Why did not the grandfather talk to the mother before taking the G'kid to the Doctor? If he did and he acted on his own there might be some doubt as to the grandfather's judgment if the kid was not very sick.

There is not enough info given to make a call. In any case there needs to be more loving talk between the family members.
