The Nichelson-Morley experiment of the early part of last century showed that the ether, as an invisible substance through which electromagnetic waves passed, did not exist; and that light and other elctromagnetic waves passed through a vacuum.
However, the term 'ether', as a nascent vacuous medium, from which physical things can appear, is still used in poetic imagery.
Your words evoke the image of a being, waiting out there for the opportunity to take on a corporeal physical reality, and descend upon the real world., only eventually to perish. This is powerful imagery, and I think you should work on the idea to complete this poem.
For inspiration, read the final words of the poem "The Second Coming" by Yeats.
