The Prodigal Son is a parable (story) told by Jesus during his ministry. In the story, a wealthy man had two sons. One of them took his inheritance, went out and wasted it with "riotous living", and found himself homeless and starving. He returned home to his father, and expected his father to be angry, but his father was so happy to welcome him back.
The meaning of this parable, we learn, is that all of us are like the prodigal son, and waste our inheritance as children of God. If we repent and return to Him, he will gladly accept us, thanks to Jesus Christ, who offered himself as a ransom for our sins and who overcame death, so we can regain a physical body at a time after our death. Forgiveness for our sins is an option for us as well, if we are willing to become disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Prodigal Son, also known as the Lost Son, is one of the best known parables of Jesus. It only appears in the Gospel of Luke, in the New Testament of the Bible.
A parable of a son who leaves his father, waste his life and then returns.
That part of the story is for those who are not Christians. The story continues about the elder son which is directed at Christians.

A prodigal son is someone who breaks off from his family to go out into the world to do his bidings, or as you would say live his life as he wants without the judgement, or help from family. Sometimes it can be a good thing, but sometimes it could be a very lonely life unless you have someone to share it with. Don't be alone and you will make it. Being alone makes it so hard. Thats with the grace of someone special looking over you.

The bible says to train up a boy when he is young so that he has something to return to.
In other words young people can make some very foolish decisions. When they grow up a little bit they realize their errors and say that is not what I want for the rest of my life.
I think my parents may not have been as stupid as I thought they were. They have a change of heart and sometimes come home and say "can I stay here while I get my education and a decent job."
He doesn't have to be someone who spends money on prostitutes? Just someone who some where along the line lost his way.
God always welcomes us back because he loves us as a father.

Prodigal just means "wasteful".
The Prodigal Son in the New Testament - Luke, Chapter 15 -
took his share of his father's money while the dad was still alive, instead of waiting to inherit it. The he went out and blew it on loose women, over-eating, and drinking himself into unconsciousness. He wasted every cent, and then returned home, where his parents made him welcome, but his only brother was as mad as hell.
The Christian message here is that we must love sinners, and put up with their bad behavior. The Bible tells us that his parents were right and his brother was wrong.
I don't know anyone who is that forgiving, but religious faith often calls on us to act in a very loving and generous way.

It's from the early English-term for the encouragement a father gave his son on his 16th birthday - 'prod a gal son' - Hence the prodigal son returns (the day after) ;)

If you read in the Bible in the book of Luke 15:11 it might shed some light on the topic for you. The prodigal son to me is a story of how we can be ungrateful and selfish to God, but if we come back with a repentant spirit he will forgive us of our sin and take us back into His kingdom.

The Prodigal Son was the title character in a parable attributed to Jesus in the gospel of Luke.
The Son went to the father, demanded his inheritance and left home. He squandered the inheritance and became impoverished. Then he returned to his father and begged forgiveness and to become one of the father's servants.
The father, overjoyed at the return of his son, gives a feast in his honor and restores him to his place of honor as his son.
This story illustrates gods infinite capacity for forgiveness, even in the face of the grotesque behavior of the prodigal son.

True religion is neither rules-based nor ritual-based. True religion is a relationship with God. Two things that all religions hold are that humanity is somehow separated from God and needs to be reconciled to Him. False religion seeks to solve this problem by observing rules and rituals. True religion solves the problem by recognizing that only God could rectify the separation, and that He has done so. True religion recognizes the following: We have all sinned and are therefore separated from God (Romans 3:23). If not rectified, the just penalty for sin is death and eternal separation from God after death (Romans 6:23). God came to us in the Person of Jesus Christ and died in our place, taking the punishment that we deserve, and rose from the dead to demonstrate that His death was a sufficient sacrifice (Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 2 Corinthians 5:21). If we receive Jesus as the Savior, trusting His death as the full payment for our sins, we are forgiven, saved, redeemed, reconciled, and justified with God (John 3:16; Romans 10:9-10; Ephesians 2:8-9).
