Hate speech in and of itself isn't a crime...even dispicable creatures like neo-nazis and klansmen have the right to say whatever they want to. If the hate speech is deemed to be terroristic threatening, or incites a riot, or leads to a person or group being harmed, then the speaker can be held criminally accountable.

I think it is ridiculous personally. I do not support people running around calling people F@gs or ******* etc but criminalizing language is NOT the answer. If someone vandalizes property or physically assaults someone, stalks etc then charge them with those crimes and punish them as such.
Not only that but these laws are very bias you wont see someone picked up for calling someone a honky, cracker or whiteboy yet the intent of the person who used this language is the same as one who uses the words mentioned above.
We all need to stop being so sensitive.

Many cities and some states have laws against hate speech. For it to be upheld by the courts, it must be very narrowly defined.

It is in some countries. I'm adamantly against the USA adopting any 'hate speech' laws.
