Most likely, you bought something with win98 given that this is a garage sale.

If I am right that it is Win98, then the password really isnt a holding you back. Thus, just press escape and it will bypass this. Then once at your desktop, search the the C:\WINDOWS folder for "*.pwl" This is the file that contains password information. From there delete every pwl file and reboot. If you then cancel at the boot up password screen, it should never ask you for a password again.

Hope this works for you (and I hope you have Win98 or 95).

relies upon on if the password is a bios password or utility(abode windows) password. you are able to look up the gadget on the Dell web site or google to discover the thank you to reset the bios password, commonly you only do away with the bios battery for a jiffy or set a jumper. if it rather is the abode windows password then you definately ought to reformat the tensepersistent and reinstall abode windows. in case you do not have abode windows to reinstall I advise downloading between the Linux distributions and the acceptable Boot disk. Reformat and repartition thepersistent from the acceptable boot disk then you definately can deploy Linux for loose.

If it is a PC, Boot it up and hold the F8 key. There are several options and I forget where it is, but you can change your password there. Then reboot and it should be OK. You can then delete all passwords for the future if you want.

What Operating System?

Or does it prompt for the password before it gets to that stage? Such as while it's still displaying black and white text?

you might have to reformat you computer, if your OS is windows...you can format the computer as long as it has a back up recovery cd or the backup files are on the computer. and you can start the backup during the dos prompt.

either way, see if you can get the info from teh previous owners, or call windows (or Macintosh) and they will understand the problem and override the system. Likely.
