5k kilometres/3k miles or 3 months whichever comes first for a carby car or what the vehicle handbook states for others.

you can go longer between oil changes with an injected car as the efi dirties the oil less; but not hugely less.

The reason for oil changes is to keep your vehicle performing well. Also so it will last longer. It is the best you can do for your engine. Every 3,000 miles is the standard recommendation. If you auto is not driven much, then I recommend every 2,000 miles. The reason being the longer it sit the more stagnant the oil in one place.
Don't scrimp or be lazy here. It will save you money and many headaches in the long run.

I actually do mine every 3000 miles. I have 2 cars and only drive each one of them about 4000 miles a year, so I change oil every 8 months or so; even though they say--or every three months. I cant imagine oil getting old if you dont drive a lot.
