Within the field of clinical psychology (and other medical fields), efficacy is more of a "research" term while effectiveness refers to how a given treatment will "work" in the "real world." Here is something that I found in an article about cancer that might explain it.

"Efficacy refers to a treatment that does more good than harm among those who receive it. Efficacy is established in the controlled setting of a clinical trial. This reflects, as near as possible, ideal conditions with selected patients.

In contrast, a treatment's effectiveness is determined by whether it does more good than harm in those to whom it is offered. This specifically refers to general populations that may have less selected patients with more variations in comorbidity, clinician involvement, patient compliance, follow-up costs, etc. Effectiveness refers to the generalizability of an intervention, while efficacy refers to internal validity."

Hope this helps. The reference to this is: www.cancernetwork.com/journals/oncology/qol1195q.htm

Efficacy is the ability to effect some event or change. A person feels efficacious when whatever he does produces the results he wants and he feels he can change his environment. A person who does not feel efficacious feels that nothing he does will make a change, leading to low self-esteem.
Effectiveness is how well a procedure performs what it purports to perform. For example, how effective is Cognitive Behavior Therapy in the treatment of depression (how successful is the treatment).

IN ideal conditions, there should not be any difference, Your partner should be the first soul you experience real oneness with. You should be able to experiment your desires truly and satisfy each other and move ahead to new elevated levels. When the individual ego is very high, directly relating itself to universal oneness is a difficult process, so he or she can get married and experience and grow with each other and than expand further. Such elaborate procedures are followed in ancient tantra philosophies. There there is no husband and wife tagging required, just two partners agree upon to help each others evolve and help each other as a subject in there experiment and practices. My brother coyote above makes this point very clear. -- Deito Harirnama Harirnama Harirnama Kevalam.
