As he/she walks along the carpet, he/she builds up a static charge. The reason this charge is built up is that carpet and human skin are relatively far apart on the Triboelectric Series. The static charge that is built up grounds through the person's hands and into the metal radiator (door knob, etc) , creaking the spark.
