Probably rats... squirrels tuck in pretty early. It could be an opossum. And if it is, it is probably building a nest. So get someone to check it out for you. If it's a raccoon, those things are mean!

Most likely its rats. Squirrels are generally not nocturnal and rarely will they occupy the same space.

Get it checked out as if it is rats or squirrels they reproduce like mad and you could soon find yourself overrun

Well, at out house, we heard a scritchy-scratchy sound and then we heard a creak or two in the ceiling. If that is what you are hearing, it is a mouse.
