I want to have my 9 1/2 month son completely weaned before his first birthday, but I am not at all interested in using commercial formula. I've had friends who weaned their babies using yogurt or soy milk, but I wanted to know if anyone else had done this. Thanks!

I don't want to use formula because my son has never taken to it. He's been exclusively breastfed and does not like the taste of formula. I figured milk has a better taste it.

I'm not sure about yogurt but a nurse at the hospital as well as doctors have told me that soy milk is the closest to breast milk. Don't give your baby cows milk until the age of one no matter what.

Your baby really should have either breast milk or formula for his first year. There are many many components in breast milk that are neccessary for brain and physical development.
Not to mention immunities for helping baby fight off illness.
Cow's milk is made for baby cows (with two stomachs) and can be hard for human babies to process and digest.

Talk to your Dr and see what they advise.

What are your reasons for not wanting to use formula? If it is a cost issue, you can get on WIC and they will provide it for you.

You need to talk to his doctor first. Not all babies can handle milk before their first birthday. Was your son a preemie? If so you need to wait until their "Corrected age" before putting them on milk. My son was almost 3 months early so he had to stay on formula until he was 14 months.

Ok my son is now 61/2 months old and is on Cow's milk. My GP advised me to wait till he was one but if i wanted to try then go for it. The way to give the milk is easy. 1st you need to boil the milk in a saucepan and when it has boiled for 5-10min there will be a thick layer of skin on the top. Peel this off and that is it. Let it cool and place it into a container and store it in the fridge. it is ok for 2-3 days only. I also add a vitamin called "Pentavite" into the milk to give those little extra vitamins that he isnt getting in his solids. It is perfectly safe for your child to have cows milk hun. Just try a little bit at first to see how he reacts. If you are entirley unsure then chat to your doctor.

Hope i helped. xoxo
