what is a play within a play called?

I can't for the life of me remember, I need to write a review and they used that technique

There are several different words used depending on the nature of the play with a play. I think vignette is the most commonly recognized word for what you are talking about though. The link below is a full article on this subject.

It is usually referred to as "a play within a play" oddly enough.
