They should not.

This teacher says no. If there is some reason you must have a cell/mobile phone, it should be kept in a locker during the day. I've heard all the "emergency" excuses, and sure, when Godzilla stomps through my classroom, you can fool yourself that getting on the cell phone will help you. If you need to call home, the school has phones. What I see with almost all people who own cell phones (I don't) is that no one makes plans anymore. In the morning, you tell your mother you have sports practice until 4:30. You have both arranged how you will get home, and an alternative plan if something happens. If you suddenly have a change of plan, use the school phone or just face life square in the face and tell yourself no.

Today phones have everything with them but the kitchen sink. Despite the fact that every student knows they cannot have cell phones visible in the classroom, I spend far too much time during every single class, stopping kids from texting, game-playing, video-watching, photo-taking, and music-listening. I would agree that listening to music can be helpful, especially in art, but educators know which music is helpful and which is not! I put on the music if we need it.

Cell phones have trained people to stop thinking and structuring their day. I have never needed one; in fact, I went four years without a phone at all, and never missed it. then there's my pet peeve about texting. Just look at how most of the kids (and adults) on Yahoo Answers write! It's stunning. No wonder they're looking for free answers from cyber-space!

No. There might be very few exceptions for such as medical emergencies supported by a doctors note.

They are disruptive. Students will make and receive phone calls and text messages in class. Some will use the phones to cheat on tests. Phones will be lost or misplaced. Some will be stolen. Unwanted pictures will be taken.

I think they should be turned off in class but not banned completely. I live in a semi-rural area and my child will often ring and say there is netball practice or can she stay behind and use computers at school etc. with friends. Especially now it is getting darker in the evenings and she has to walk/cycle through very quiet places, I want to know where she is. The phone is for my benefit too. It stops me panicking if she's late home or if I get held up she does not worry about where I am.

As she has to pay for any credit over £10 a month, and she's tight fisted where money is concerned, she does not waste money texting kids sitting next to her or which she will see within the next hour etc.

Heck yeah they're getting smarter and some allow you to take notes, plus some phone allow a user to set a calender so you could use your schedule in the calender, and that have a clock feature. Let me ask you this what if a child's school was bruned down to the point where no office phone was in use anymore?

Yes they should be allowed, but they should be switched off. Phone lines can be knocked out, land lines ARE NOT reliable. It would be beneficial for there to be students with mobile phones in case of emergency.

Why would anyone need a mobile phone in school?

No. Children are there to learn, not to send texts and swap pictures. And having a mobile makes the child a potential target for mugging. They should leave the phone at home.

I am a teacher and let's shock everyone...YES, they should be allowed.

I allow my year 9 and above to listen to their music in class aslong as they have headphones and are not disturbing others. When i talk to the class, i ask for them to be taken out. If anyone mistreats this trust, i just ban them until i know pupils listen properly.

I teach art by the way and i reckon it helps.

When they are in middle or high school, I think it's okay only for purposes of contacting a parent after school is out. Otherwise, during school hours, they should be kept in a locker turned off.

I agree with alot of the people here. Children will have phones, and be kept with them, but left in lockers turned off during school hours.
