You can do almost anything you want to one side of an equation as long as you do the same thing to the other side:
- 9t + 2 = 56
- 9t + 2 - 2 = 56 - 2
- 9t = 54
(- 1)(- 9t) = (- 1)(54)
9t = - 54
(9t)/9 = (- 54)/9
t = - 6

ok if it is -9t+2=56 then you would have to find out what times -9+2 would equal 56. So first I would subtract 2 from 54 to see what you would have to get on the other side. With that said you would have to multiply -9 times -6 for this problem to be correct. Because -9x-6 would equal 54 and 54 plus 2 would equal 56! Hope that answers you question! :)

The people above me who said it is 6 are wrong (sorry!) because -9 times 6 would equal -54 and -54+2=-52, so 6 is not right.

t=56-2÷-9
t=-6

You always have to do the same thing to both sides of the equation.
Lets start by sutracting 2 from both sides. Now we have
-9t = 54 Now multiply both sides by -1
9t = -54 Divide both sides by 9
t = -6 and there's your answer.

Minus 9 what? There has to be , as other answers have suggested, a variable, the equation has to make sense!
For instance, minus 9x + 2x = 56, which will equate to "x" having a value of -8 (remembe, minus times minus = plus!)
The eventual answer itself doesn't make much (any!) sense.
Have you copied the equation correctly?

This equation would not balance becuase there is no x. If you left it like this then the answer would be -7=56

is there supposed to be a variable in this equation? Or are you supposed to make the equation equal?
If so then here's how you make it equal.

(-9+2)*(-8) = 56

you would subtract 2 from both sides so then it would be
-9t=54

then you would divide -9 on both sides(54/9)
and your answer is t=6

If this is what you have, then -7 = 56, which is a false statement and there is no solution,
