it was done to emphasize the change in surroundings when the bear first goes into the wilderness. the idea was to make it different for the audience as well as the character.

one other movie that changed aspect ratios was "the horse whisperer" which also went from 1.85 to 2.35 to emphasize a change in surroundings.
