security (need to call for help, flat tire, etc), convenience, ease of use, decrease of missed calls...

Portability, personal phone number (if you are in a crowded house), and very much for emergency uses such as dialing 911 in an accident.

Of course now they also can play MP3s, play games, personalized with screens and ringtones, read email, send emails, etc.
