We have done so for years. It's basically free fertilizer for your garden. We use all of our yard and kitchen waste (excluding the usual items that you shouldn't try to compost at home) and use it in the garden.

I tried but it is so dry here (Southern California) that any compost pile just sits there dormant. I have chickens, sheep, horses, and a garden and in the end I have to fill a dumpster every week to keep ahead of it. I would love to figure out how to compost efficiently but can't figure out how to do so with our water shortage.

yes mulching grass clippings, leaves and the like I don;t use any left over household food but you can use horse, bunny manure which is very high in it;s nitrogen and phosphates, just make sure you turn your mulch pile often as the grass clippings can get very hot it takes approximately 10 days for your recycle to take affect and to the person that said just go buy a bad well it;s not so nice to know that when you use it your sticking your hands in road kill picked up by the counties all the dear, in orgeon are used this way and it makes me sick also you can add a few bags of steer manure to your existing pile and you will have a very nice and rich mixture and the smell of manure only lasts 3 days have fun you can do it
