Are you, or is someone you know, addicted to painkillers such as Solpadeine Plus, or Co-Codamol (the ones you can buy over the counter).

I noticed recently that I was taking Solpadeine Plus when I didn't even have a headache. I asked my pharmacist about safe levels etc, and during our conversation he told me that these painkillers just fly off the shelves as more and more people are becoming addicted to the codeine in them - not realising the danger of overdosing on paracetamol, or of wrecking their liver.

I see the TV advert for Solpadeine Plus now advises that you should take them if you feel pain, "and if you don't, don't", and that the manufacturer has reduced the largest packet size from 60, to 32 tablets.

I have a feeling the drugs company who makes these tablets are fully aware of how addictive they are, and just wondered how many people are taking more OTC painkillers than is good for them.

The Codeine is a muscle relaxant and can make you feel chilled. It is so easy to get hooked on this feeling when the medication is so easily available.I had a Friend who was hooked on codeine based pills and ended up hospitalised with severe headaches. She never told the hospital what she was doing and she still takes them daily even though she knows the risks. Before long we will see a public awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of taking these tablets.

In the U.S. all codeine products are either prescription only or exempt narcotic. The ones which are exempt narcotic you have to sign a log book and show id to get them. You are only allow a certain amount per 3 day period. Many pharmacies do not dispense the exempt narcotics as OTC, but only as prescription.
It's a known fact that codeine is addicted. People need to take some responsibility for themselves.
