What name do I sign? We are legally married and we are just waiting on the certified copy of the marriage certificate before I change my drivers licence and social security card. So am I still legally my last name or am I his?

First time wife ;) help me out!

Oh yea and HOW do I change my name? I assume I just take our marriage certificate to the social security office and then the DMV. He doesn't know either.

Once you sign your marriage license, your name is automatically changed to his last name. When you go to change your name on your driver's license and your Social Security Card, make sure you take your marriage license with you because they will need to see it to verify. You are legally his last name though, to answer your question. Congradulations!

You are on the right track! First all, just sign your name using his last name and follow thru with the DMV and social sec. office. Also while there inquire if they are aware of any other legal hoops you may have to jump through. These folks here these questions all the time and will be best equipped to answer your question! By the way....congrats and best wishes for a happy life together!

When you marry you have an option to change your name to his last name, he can change his to yours, you can use a hyphenated version, or you can both select another name. Interesting huh?
Many women opt not to change their name, especially considering the paperwork involved, and preferring to retain some individuality, career name recognition, and their own credit rating etc.
Every state is different, some services let you change your name online (DMV in some states) others require you to come in and fill out papers. You should call or go online and check on requirements.
Naturally before you start signing your new name, to bank checks etc, you should notify the service that there is a name change. Some places may not let you change an account name, you may have to open new accounts.

I changed my name with first marriage, and have retained that name, even though i was married/divorced a second time. It was just too much trouble to change things again. :)

You are legally married, so you can sign your married name.

To change your name, you are correct. Take your marriage license to the DMV and Social Security office and they will issue you new ID's with your married name. Also, anything you have (car insurance, loans, credit cards, etc), you should notify them as well of your name change.

Congratulations and many blessings to you both!

You are correct in the DMV and Social Security. Make sure you have other ID with you at both places to verify the changes.

For now, you can go right ahead and sign your new name, because it becomes effective the instant your marriage license is signed by the presiding authority.

You sign his name. You are legally his wife. You go down to the DMV or go to their website and it will tell you how to change your driver's license and there's a form for Social Security you have to mail in along with a copy of your marriage certificate.

Don't forget to change your bank account, any insurance policies you have, your name at work, your 401K, any credit cards you have, phone companies, etc.

yes, you would just take your marriage certificate to the social security office and DMV as well as banks, credit card companies, and anything else that has your maiden name. Until your legal documents are changed you are still legally known by you maiden name

Well - it depends upon what you are signing.. I just went through this.
If its your checking--- and its still your old last name..sign it with that -
Other things..you've already changed..sign w/ your new last name.
YOu will be doing this for a while... because legally - you don't have his last name yet!!
Just a marriage license doesn't do it. You need to get it changed at the social security office. for that - you need to get that certified copy of the marriage license (I had to wait on that too) - and...for the social security office- that wasn't enough for them..they also needed my drivers license......etc
I actually did my drivers license before my SS card - once I received my marriage license - I went and did my drivers license.

Legally you still have your last name until YOU change it. Lots of women get married and don't take his name. Sign with your maiden name until your get stuff changed over..... ie if your bank card is in your old last name sign with what your card shows until you get it changed.
To change your name at DMV and SSO....yes all you need to do is take your marriage cert. be sure you make copies. Never take the original you run the risk of loosing it.
