I have gestational diabetes, I have been on antibiotics for about a month now trying to get rid of a UTI, and I am also 37 weeks pregnant all of which contribute to a yeast infection. I went to the doctor, they said I have a yeast infection and I could use Monistat. I didn't know what the signs were as I have never had one.

Has anyone ever done this? What are the consequences of being so late in pregnancy? Any risk to the baby? Any other ideas?

k_snider2007:

With gestational diabetes, you are set up for yeast infections. The extra sugar in your blood leads to higher sugar counts in all your secretions. Yeast loves sugar!

The monistat is easy, kills the yeast, and will cause no risk to your baby. Urinary and vaginal infections are what are riskiest for your baby, and yes, your baby can get thrush from your yeast infection if it isn't gone by delivery.

Of course, your baby can get thrush from the sugar in your milk, but that won't be immediately after delivery.

The answer regarding probiotics is a bit strident - depending on the antibiotics you are on for your UTI, you needn't buy into the fear factor. Breast feeding is a personal decision and the first two days give your baby a boost of immune cells similar to what you are currently giving them with your blood supply to the uterus.

You do not "damage" a baby's immune system by not giving them your colostrum, the fluid you produce prior to your milk supply. They just have a window of less protection as the maternal antibodies from the placenta wear out and their immune system isn't quite up and running. You are only talking about a few more weeks of reduced immunity to the things you have been exposed to - you child will not be immune to anything you are not immune to anyway!

Monistat is fine, homeopathic remedies also work well, but I'd want the yeast infection gone either way.

I had my first yeast infection a couple of months ago too and I'm now 17 weeks pregnant. After you do the Monistat it should go away almost immediately. I think if you still have a yeast infection when you give birth the baby could get it, called thrush. Talk to your doctor about all your concerns. Good luck!

Suggest you Google "Yeast Guard" which is a homeopathic remedy that I have found really effective for yeast infections.

Also, you will want to take some pro-biotics or at least eat kefir, yogurt or other fermented foods to to repopulate your intestinal flora so that your baby will have healthy intestinal flora and the opportunity to have a healthy immune system. You should do this anytime you take antibiotics for at least a month or so after finishing the antibiotics...

And by all means breast feed as much as you can in the early days so that your baby will get the colostrum he/she needs from your breast milk which also is essential for building a healthy immune system.

My mother took antibiotics late in pregnancy and didn't nurse me (it was normal not to in the 60s) and I am still challenged by a damaged immnue system with allergies and asthma, (which I am healing), but it would have been a lot easier if my mom had known what I know now... : )

Hope this helps!
